Read Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:34-40. Many believers have thought of the 10 Commandments as having two sections - a God- focussed section and a people focussed section - what do you think about this?
The Hebrew word for honour means heavy or weighty. How does this describe your experience of parenting or of being a child and observing your parents?
Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:1-3 that the 5th commandment is the first one with a promise. What is the promise? What do you think it means?
Hollywood and culture do a disservice to us in how kids are encouraged to think about obedience to parents. What does Colossians 3:20 encourage? How does a child’s obedience to their parents help establish their obedience to God?
In Mark 7:9-13 Jesus accused the Pharisees of avoiding the required honour and support of their parents. Paul in 1 Timothy 5:8 takes this seriously as well. What does honour and support look like today in your family?
In Romans 3:23 we are reminded that we are imperfect and all require forgiveness. How do forgiveness and honouring our parents go together?
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 talks about the legacy of faith that parents pass to their children. What impact does a parent’s faith have on their children?
