Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What’s a favourite fall activity?

Read: 1 Peter 1:22-2:12. Ask God to bless your study.

1. Observe and share everything Peter says about Jesus in 2:4-8, even seemingly unimportant things.

2. Christians are “like living stones” being built into a “spiritual house” (v. 5). What does this image imply about how you should view yourself, other Christians, and the church as a whole (see 1 Corinthians 3:9-16; Ephesians 2:19-22)?

3. Reflect on what it means to be “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (2:9). What implications might this identity have for your life?

4. What are “spiritual sacrifices” (1 Peter 2:5. Also see Psalm 51:17; Romans 12:1; 15:15-16; Hebrews 13:15-16)?

5. What is a cornerstone? How is Jesus like a cornerstone to you? In what ways is Jesus a stumbling block to some people?

6. Share what “whoever believes in him will not be put to mshame” (v. 6b) means to you. When have you felt rejected? How is Christ precious to you? Close in prayer thanking God for Christ our cornerstone, and the privilege of serving as royal priests, asking him to help us build one another up in love and in sharing the gospel with others.
